By now I’m sure you have noticed the ads that read, “Your computer is infected with spyware! Click here to scan your computer.” These ads redirect you to a website where you can purchase anti-spyware software, but these programs do not eliminate them from your computer and instead may install more harmful spyware onto your system. You must be aware of these fake products that steal your money in order to avoid them.

There are several types of ads which redirect you to the websites selling these rogue cleaners. The most common is a pop-up that says your computer is infected. You can instantly tell that the program is a fake. The ‘X’ button to close the pop-up is actually a link, when you hover over it instead of seeing your mouse pointer, you continue to see the hand, which indicates a link. So, many times these companies try to force you to their website to sell their products.

An easy way to remove these pop-ups without restarting your computer is to bring up your task manager by right clicking in your windows tool bar and clicking task manager, or by pressing control-alt-delete (Windows). Once in the manager click applications and end task on the pop-up (may be titled Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)

Another example of this type of ad that is also very common takes on other websites. While visiting other websites, even highly respectable and safe ones, you will see banner adds that warn you your computer is infected. These ads even look like a window on your computer, so they mislead you into believing the threat is real.

The true threat is these rogue anti-spyware programs themselves. Many of them come with very harmful spyware hidden in its files. This type of program can work to steal your credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and other private information you may have on your computer. These ads usually make people wonder if their computer truly is infected. It is important that you do not click these links. You should instead use a professional spyware cleaner you can trust.

Quality anti-spyware software is reliable and will cleanse your computer of harmful programs and continue to protect you from future infections. These programs come with good supports systems and easy-to-use interfaces. They are worth the time and money you invest to find them and you will appreciate having it later on.

Unlike rogue cleaners they do not hurt your computer’s performance and they do not install spyware of their own. In conclusion, avoid clicking the links associated with these ads, because they lead to harmful programs that may put you at risk, and alternatively use a tried-and-trusted anti-spyware program.
